Maine's roads generally have narrow shoulders and the traffic can be quite heavy, especially in tourist season. However, along the coast there are some secondary roads that have less traffic. Ilseboro, Vinalhaven and North Haven islands are particularly pleasant by bike. Roads through the mountains of western Maine present challenging climbs for cyclists.
