Most events listed here are non-profit and are open to all cyclists. For officially-sanctioned racing events, check the cycling organizations such as NORBA and USA Cycling. Tour de Cure is a series of annual tours in more than 80 locations to support research into diabetes. tour.diabetes.org There are also about 100 bike tours in 48 states to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Bike Aid organizes a ride across the US to raise funds for community development and education in developing countries. Entry fees are $150/200 plus a minimum of $3,600 in pledges (2004). Ride of SilenceA worldwide silent slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph/19.3 kph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways held in mid-May each year. The object is to remember those who have been injured or killed
and raise awareness of bicycling so that we can all safely share the road. National Bike MonthThe month of May has been declared National Bike Month since 1955. The goal is to promote bike education and safety programs and bicycle commuting. Bike-to-Work Week occurs in mid-May. BikeSummerBikeSummer, a month-long festival celebrating the bicycle, offers a schedule of bike rides, bike culture, advocacy discussions, music, films, and more. It takes place in a different city each year: San Francisco in 1999, Chicago 2000, Vancouver 2001, Portland 2002, New York City 2003, Seattle in 2004, and Los Angeles in 2005.
