City name:Bicycling in Boston Number of times biking: Weekly Date last visited: Apr, 2005 Sections biked: Downtown, Back Bay, Waterfront, North End, South End, South Boston, Cambridge, Roxbury, Jamaica Plains Favorite sections: Cambridge Road rating: Poor Bike route rating: Poor Bike lane rating: Poor Bike path rating: Fair Rating: 2.5 stars What I liked: Cambridge has decent bike lanes. What I disliked: Boston is not friendly to bikes in the least. They've installed more bike racks to appease us, but its a pretty empty gesture when you have to deal with a lack of bike lanes and poor traffic regulation just to get to the racks. City name:Bicycling in Boston Number of times biking: Weekly Date last visited: Sept, 2003 Sections biked: Boston, Cambridge, Lexington, Back Bay, Fenway, Jamaica Plain, Waterfront Favorite sections: Newbury Street Road rating: Poor Bike route rating: Fair Bike lane rating: Fair Bike path rating: Very good Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: Safety rates about a 1 but convenience and enjoyment are a 5. This is one of the easiest cities in which to get around. There aren't any real hills and there are lots of other cyclists so the motorists are sort of used to it. A good cyclist can get anywhere in town much faster than any motorist. What I disliked: The motorists and the street surfaces are terrible. It's the worst city to drive in. There aren't many street signs so you don't know where you are. Survey a map before each outing and just explore if you have the time. Additional comments: Don't be afraid to yell at people. Bostonians are very caustic and respond well to it. You get much more help and respect by being gruff than you do by being shy, but still, always say, thank you. Especially when a car decides NOT to pull out and kill you. Submitted by: Sam Weaver from: Cambridge Date submitted: Sept 4, 2003
