Bicycle facilities: New York City has several hundred miles of bike lanes and greenways (off-road trails) and are planning to complete a network of 1,800 miles throughout the five boroughs by 2030. Central Park is closed to automobile traffic from 7PM to 6AM weekdays and on weekends. The city provides about 3,000 bike racks.
About the city: New York City (pop. 7 million) consists of five boroughs: Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and Brooklyn. The city is a major manufacturing, cultural and financial center and has a huge shipping port.
Public transit: Bicycles are permitted in the subway (except during rush hours) and on PATH (Port Authority Trans Hudson) trains between Manhattan, Hobokken and Newark with some restrictions. Bicycling organizations: Transportation Alternatives has lots of information on biking in NYC. Recycle-a-Bicycle promotes bicycle use, teaches bicycle mechanics to youths and adults and sells recycled bikes. Time Up environmental group schedules many cycling events such as bike repair workshops and a monthly Central Park Moonlight Ride. See also the NY Bicycle Clubs listings.

Bike trails: Hudson Valley Greenway is the southern end of the Batt-to-Bear Trail, a 56-mile pathway from Battery Park to Bear Mountain. The East River Bikeway runs along the east side of Manhattan between 14th Street and Wall Street. There are plans to expand the NYC Greenway network to 350 miles.
Bike events: Five Boro Bike Tour (42 miles), Bike Month, and Bicycle Film Festival all take place in May. New York City Century Bike Tour (15-100 miles) in early September.

Airport: Three airports are operated by the Port Authority: John F Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International and LaGuardia airports.
Getting to the city: AmTrak offers daily rail service. There are several commuter trains. Two railway stations and two bus terminals are run by the Port Authority.
