Many of the 100-or-so state parks and forests in Connecticut offer hiking trails and are linked by the 700-mile Blue-Blazed Trail System developed by the Connecticut Forest and Park Association. The trails are described in the Connecticut Walk Book published by the association. The Appalachian Trail cuts across the northwest corner of Connecticut for about 60 miles. It can be accessed at several road crossings for an out-and-back hike. One of the most challenging hikes in Connecticut is up the 2,300-foot Bear Mountain, a 7-mile loop partially along the AT. Rhode Island with its small and rather densely populated areas has relatively few opportunities for actual hiking. The North-South Trail, as its name indicates, runs north to south through western Rhode Island from the Massachusetts border to Charlestown, a distance of about 72 miles.
