Most of the state's more challenging hiking trails are located in the Berkshire Mountains in western Massachusetts. The Appalachian Trail wends its way through the Berkshires for almost 90 miles from top to bottom of the state. The Appalachian Mountain Club operates a lodge on top of Mount Greylock, the tallest peak in Massachusetts.
