Maine's North Woods has long been thought of as New England's great wilderness but lumber companies have building roads through it and clearing it away at an alarming rate. However, moose and other wildlife are still commonly encountered.

Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park is the official northen terminus of the Appalachian Trail and also the southern terminus of the International AT extension is being constructed north into Canada.
