Despite its reputation as an industrial region, Michigan has a natural side where there are plenty of opportunities for hiking. The terrain is generally flat to rolling with a couple of exceptions. There is hilly terrain along the northwestern shore of the Lower Peninsula and in the Porcupine Mountains at the northwestern end of the Upper Peninsula.
