Despite its reputation as an industrial region, Michigan has a natural side where there are plenty of opportunities for hiking. The terrain is generally flat to rolling with a couple of exceptions. There is hilly terrain along the northwestern shore of the Lower Peninsula and in the Porcupine Mountains at the northwestern end of the Upper Peninsula. The Michigan Shore to Shore Riding-Hiking Trail, 213 miles from Empire to Tawas City, is intended for hiking and horseback riding but some stretches may not be suitable for hiking (maps available from the Huron-Manistee NF). Hiking in State ParksMost of Michigan's 90 state parks have hiking trails--too many to list in their entirety. Parks listed below have the largest hiking networks (some trails are shared with mountain bikers and/or horseback riders).
Hiking in State ForestsCopper Country State Forest, Baraga Escanaba SF, Escanaba Lake Superior SF, Newberry Mackinaw SF, Gaylord Pere Marquette SF, Cadillac Ausable SF, Mio Trail ratings are submitted by visitors to this site who have hiked the trails and thus are subjective. You can rate the trails at an area that you have visited by clicking on the "Rate this Area" link found under that area's listing.
