Minnesota means "land of the sky-tinted water" in Sioux, an appropriate description since there are over 12,000 lakes in the state. There are also plenty of trails, many of them on state or federal lands. Hiking Trails in MinnesotaThe following map shows only the approximate locations of trails.
Hiking Trails in MinnesotaThe Minnesota section of the North Country National Scenic Trail follows the Superior Hiking Trail from Duluth to Grand Marais, then the Border Trail and the Kekekabic Trail to Ely. From there, the route is yet to be finalized, but it will pass through Chippewa National Forest and Itasca and Maplewood state parks.
State and National ParksMore than half of Minnesota's 68 state parks have 10 miles or more of hiking trails--too many to list here. Many also have backpack camping sites. Some trails are used by horseback riders and mountain bikers. The following parks have the largest hiking networks:
Trail ratings are submitted by visitors to this site who have hiked the trails and thus are subjective. You can rate the trails at an area that you have visited by clicking on the "Rate this Area" link found under that area's listing. Hiking in State ForestsMany of Minnesota's state forests also have hiking trails. For info on shared-use trails, see also Mountain Biking in Minnesota and Rail Trails in Minnesota.
