Whether you are looking for an afternoon ramble or a week-long trek, we have the trail for you. Some of the country's choicest hiking destinations are found in these pages. Several long-distance hiking trails are located in the US: the Pacific Crest, Continental Divide Trail, Appalachian and North Country Scenic Trails. For more about these and other trails see Major US Trails. Other trails, not as long but lengthy by any other standard, are either already in place or are under development. The oldest of these, the Long Trail in Vermont, has been in existence since 1921. Minnesota's Superior Trail wends its way 250 miles across the Sawtooth Mountains overlooking Lake Superior. In this website "hiking trail" indicates trails that do not have a gravel or asphalt surface. Long-distance trails with a gravel or asphalt surface are listed under rail trails. Many parks in each province and territory have hiking trails, but only parks with more than 10 miles (15 km) of trails are listed in the regional hiking pages. Top Hiking ClubsHundreds of hiking and outdoor clubs are involved in organizing hiking trips and developing trails. Trail MaintenanceMany hiking trails were constructed entirely by volunteer labor and require annual maintenance to keep them usable. If you are a frequent hiker, consider helping out by donating labor or money. To find the organization responsible for maintaining trails in your area, check the Club listings and the Resources section of our hiking pages.
