Built between 1910 and 1930, prior to the Appalachian Trail, the Long Trail was the nation's first major long-distance hiking trail. The LT runs 270 miles over the Green Mountains from Massachusetts to the Canadian border with primitive shelters located about every 10 miles. Another 175 miles of side trails offer alternate routes for day hikers. About 100 miles of the southern section of the LT is twinned with the Appalachian Trail.
