American Hiking Society is dedicated to promoting hiking and to establishing, protecting and maintaining foot trails in the US. It has more than 130 member trail clubs and organizations and nearly 10,000 individuals. www.americanhiking.org

American Trails is a national trails advocacy organization working for the common interests of all trail users. www.americantrails.org

Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association - West - www.aldha.org

Appalachian Trail Conference, Harper's Ferry, VA, oversees maintenance of the AT by its member organizations and protects the trail from encroaching development. www.ATConf.org

Continental Divide Trail Alliance (AHS), Pine, CO is building a hiking trail 3,100 miles along the Continental Divide. www.cdtrail.org

The Desert Trail Organization, Madras, OR - dedicated to building a trail from Canada to Mexico, primarily through desert terrain. www.madras.net/dta

Highpointers Club - for peak baggers interested in summitting the highest point of every state. www.highpointers.com

North Country Trail Association (AHS), Grand Rapids, MI - developers of the 4,000-mile North Country National Scenic Trail from New York to North Dakota. www.northcountrytrail.org

Pacific Crest Trail Association (AHS), Sacramento, CA - developers of the 2,650-mile hiking trail along the mountains of the Pacific coast. www.pcta.org
