20   Top   Down     Rating: 4 of 5 stars

Trail Name: Harriman and Bear Mountain State Parks
I have hiked there: Several times
I last hiked there in: Dec, 2005
Trails that I hiked: All
Favorite trails: the trails near the lakes
Best time to go: fall and spring
Trail marking: Fair
Trail maintenance: Fair
Rating: 4 stars
What I liked: Close to my home.
What I disliked: Trail map is not informative. Everyone on staff discourages camping on what feels like is their back yard. roads closed most of winter. staff and administration could really care less about the hikers. they just want to make their jobs easier. badly in need of new administration. police are more harrassing then protective.

Additional comments: ask someone experienced about ways to get to the trails during winter (roads are closed off) and where to camp (not shown on the trail maps available at the info center). avoid asking staff or police.

What I liked: Trails are well maintained, a joy to hike. Some are easy, some are pretty difficult. It depends on what you're doing, how long of a trip your are on, etc. The scenery going up most of the mountains is wonderful, there is always something to see on the trail, whether your going up a mountain or not.

Trail Name: Fahnestock State Park
I have hiked there: Once
I last hiked there in: June, 2005
Trails that I hiked: The blue trail that begins about a half mile west of the park office at the Canopus beach parking area.
Favorite trails: This was our first and certainly not our last trip to hike these trails.
Best time to go: If you go in June, you may wish to consider early morning or find a dry spell. It was quite humid.
Trail marking: Fair
Trail maintenance: Very good
Rating: 4 stars
What I liked: Well maintained, continuously variable in effort to hike.
What I disliked: We packed out two garbage bags of trash and bottles that others left behind. But even this didn't detract from the awesome beauty.
Additional comments: Insect repellent. I'll bring it next time. The mosquitoes aren't as vicious as what I remember from Texas, but they still are bothersome.

Trail Name: Finger Lakes Trail
I have hiked there: Several times
I last hiked there in: August, 103
Trails that I hiked: much of the trail from walton to near cortland. fire tower trail (preston)
Favorite trails: part near labrador unique area
Best time to go: anytime, but mud season. Tried in winter, but it was kind of hard to follow the white blazes in the snow
Trail marking: Very good
Trail maintenance: Fair
Rating: 5 stars
What I liked: easy access, very nice scenery, different kinds of walking (mountains, flats, swamps and lakes
What I disliked: at points it seems to be just a green tunnel, and yes it is a shame that the horses chew it up. However, it is proper to walk through the mud and deal with wet boots (get waterproof ones) rather than beat a new trail around, that leads to erosion

The trails were easily accessable from any road and visibly marked. The trails are broken up by roads just enough to allow short hikes or long weekend journeys.

Comments: See my comments of where I hiked...please note, it covers almost all of what I've hiked.

Trail Name: Shawangunks
I have hiked there: Once
I last hiked there in: July, 2003
Trails that I hiked: Sams point to Ice Caves
Favorite trails: same.
Best time to go: summer was hot, so high and in the clouds, close to the sun.
Trail marking: None
Trail maintenance: Very good
Rating: 5 stars
What I liked: small dwarf pines, blueberry bushes and other
berry plants. Saw a buck far back in the pines. The ridge at the top of the cliff is awesome up close, the view at the top is incredible. We went @ 6pm. Seemed as if we could touch the sun as it was setting. Be sure to go during daylight hours. Ice water rushing out of the rocks at the top-miraculous.
What I disliked: Exciting but scary to walk so close to the cliff edge. Very steep climb up & climb down. Take into account time 3 hr. to & fro the caves...don't get stuck inside at dusk.
Comments: Heard rattler from rattle snake during hike. Inside ice caves is DARK and not trail marked, just follow the worn dirt path from cave to cave to find your way. Could get lost inside. Be sure not to go alone, have other adults with you. Be sure to sign the register at the bottom of the trail and bring a cell just incase.
