Trail Name:Old Loggers Path I have hiked there: A few times I last hiked there in: Oct, 101 Trails that I hiked: Old Loggers Path, Loyalsock Trail Favorite trails: Best time to go: Fall Trail marking: Fair Trail maintenance: Fair Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: beautiful vistas, varying scenery, foilage and terrain What I disliked: the best Vista (as others have noted) is accessible by car. Our sleep was interrupted at 1 or 2am by a group of intoxicated young people who were very loud and inconsiderate. Additional comments: Consider not camping on the vista. Trail Name:Old Loggers Path I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: Sept, 2005 Trails that I hiked: Multi-day trips in Northern PA: Old Loggers Path, Chuck Keiper, Black Forest, Quehanna Favorite trails: Chuck Keiper Best time to go: Late April, Mid September Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: The Old Loggers Path is a great trail to introduce someone to multi-day backpacking. Rock Run is spectacular (despite the lightly-used road on its opposite bank) and the vistas are great. Considering the elevation change, the grades are particularly gentle -- a lot of view for little effort. What I disliked: Although extremely well blazed, you have to keep an eye out for some of the turns -- a disadvantage of using so many old logging roads and railroad grades. And one short relocation, designed to keep the trail off a forest road opposite a recently-logged area, is not worth the effort of cutting through all the nettles -- but it's very short. Additional comments: The Chuck Keiper is my favorite Northern PA trail -- I've done it four times -- but it's not nearly so well maintained nor easy to follow. The Sproul vista truly is the best I've ever seen in PA, but as previous reviewer noted, it's accessible by car -- and in fact was the only place I saw another person (in a camper smoking cigarettes and watching television!) Trail Name:Chuck Keiper Trail I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: August, 2005 Trails that I hiked: LHT, Mid State (a section), Lost Turkey Favorite trails: They are all nice. Best time to go: Late spring/early summer would be ideal for the flowering of the mountain, which the trail is loaded with, but not if it is too wet. Trail marking: Fair Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 4 stars What I liked: Abundent wildlife, On a three day trip on the west loop I saw 5 deer, 5 turkey, a baby grouse and almost stepped on a rattle snake. The trail is also a good workout. Numerous camp sites. What I disliked: There were some areas that could have had a vista, aside from the vista at the trail head there was nothing that great (as far as the west loop is concerned). Additional comments: Leave no trace. Submitted by: Nick Scaletta from: State College, PA Date submitted: Aug 26, 2005

Trail Name:Black Forest Trail I have hiked there: Several times I last hiked there in: Nov, 104 Trails that I hiked: Blue Rocks
AT - Through South Central PA
Golden Eagle
Favorite trails: BLACK FOREST!!! Best time to go: Fall or Winter Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 5 stars What I liked: The trail is challenging; you don't have much room for lethargy. Not only is it gorgeous PA wildlife, but when you're done, you've accomplished something. What I disliked: Not closer to home! Additional comments: 42 miles in 24 hours!!!
The best weekend warrior path starts at the trailhead moving right, and then following that until the road that takes you to foster hollow, up foster follow (great ascent) then a steady descent until the trailhead, about 13 miles - enough to have at least half a day of relaxation! Trail Name:Old Loggers Path I have hiked there: A few times I last hiked there in: July, 2005 Trails that I hiked: Favorite trails: Best time to go: Warm weather Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: Good vistas, plenty of water sources, variable but not too difficult. Did it over the July 4th weekend and saw few people and never had to camp with anyone, very quiet. What I disliked: One small section was not well maintained with overgrowth and blowdowns. Additional comments: Some of the open areas have large numbers of stinging nettle and thorn bushes so wear long pants or gaiters. Submitted by: ESE from: Philadelphia Date submitted: July 8, 2005

Trail Name:West Rim Trail I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: Apr, 2005 Trails that I hiked: West Rim Trail, Black Forest Trail, Naval Run Trail Favorite trails: West Rim Best time to go: Spring Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 5 stars What I liked: Spectacular views up and down the trail of the Pine Creek Gorge What I disliked: nothing. Additional comments: Outstanding weekend trip. Spectacular views, great campsites, easy access. Submitted by: Tim Boyle from: Hanover, Pa Date submitted: July 7, 2005

Trail Name:Black Forest Trail I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: July, 2005 Trails that I hiked: West Rim Trail, Naval Run Trail Favorite trails: West Rim Best time to go: Spring Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Fair Rating: 2 stars What I liked: Views along the trail were good, though not as spectaculr as West Rim Trail. Given the choice, I'd hike the West Rim Trail any day. Easier, better campsites and better scenery. What I disliked: Much too rugged for a hot, humid 90 degree July day. Climb up to ridge from Naval Run was a killer. Campsite listed on BFT topo at top of Slide Hollow should be removed from map. Worst camp site I have stayed in 12 years of backpacking. Actually, it's more of a tiny, tiny, rock strewn clearing that sits in and beside the slide hollow stream bed. Large enough for one 2-man tent or two bivvies. Additional comments: Way cool wildlife! Saw two bears in two days, deer, boatloads of toads, various rodents and a handful of neon orange salamanders. I'll have to look them up. Trail Name:Mid State Trail I have hiked there: Several times I last hiked there in: Apr, 2005 Trails that I hiked: Midstate Favorite trails: Best time to go: Early spring and fall Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: The solitare and the animals you see along the way What I disliked: The point between Pine-Loganton road and Woolrich to be percice the JUNK YARD along the road it seems that there is more trash in that area than on the whole trail, but what can you do it is a public road way. Additional comments: Just off the trail coming down by Waterville above Dam run road there is a cliff that is worth walking to to get a great view of the town itself. Trail Name:Black Forest Trail I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: May, 2005 Trails that I hiked: Not Many in this area Favorite trails: The BFT Best time to go: The Spring Time Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Fair Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: The scenery was amazing at some of the vistas, i also really enjoyed the smell of wild flowers. What I disliked: The are extremely challenging Additional comments: The trail was amazing, but it was very hard it is alot of uphill, i have hiked out west and this is the hardest trail i have every done. It was very worth it to get the smell of wildflowers and the vistas. If you are going to do the trail make sure you are in good shape Submitted by: Dante from: Cleveland Ohio Date submitted: May 30, 2005

Not too crowded. What I disliked: Nothing. Additional comments: Not sure why previous reviewer had trouble with the trail. It is extremely well marked with orange blazes, and is well maintained. Trail Name:Old Loggers Path I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: Apr, 2005 Trails that I hiked: Old Logger's path Favorite trails: Best time to go: Trail marking: None Trail maintenance: Poor Rating: 1 star What I liked: Area is absolutley beautiful. Saw some Grouse and untold #'s of deer. What I disliked: I got some awful information from the local State Forest folks. They indicated No snow and there was signiicant snow which made access to the Masten area difficult and the hiking very slow. The trail was not marked at all - the markers were virtually non existent and the trail guide and DCNR map were of little help. At one [point we actually were walking around in snow with no appreciable markings to detemine the trail. What a disaster! I had threee young children and our 2 yo Golden Retriever (all on Spring break - even the dog) so a great family outing but what a disaster. The other trails that were important to get "reads" from for accuracy of the other trails in the area. They were no there at all. I had all local USGS Topo Maps and local info. All were not even usable. Additional comments: World's End State Park is fabulous and the people are so nice. Submitted by: Fran from: Havertown, PA Date submitted: April 4, 2005

Greenwood Spur
Johnson Trail Favorite trails: Mid-State Best time to go: Early Spring/Mid-Autumn Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 5 stars What I liked: challenging hiking that rewards you with great vistas and few other hikers. Multiple entry points and connection with the link trail in Greenwood Furnace state park allow for ANY length hike! What I disliked: numerous rattlesnake sightings on account of very rocky ridge hiking Additional comments: Submitted by: Rory Gibbens from: Date submitted: Feb 8, 2005

Trail Name:Laurel Highlands Trail I have hiked there: A few times I last hiked there in: Jan, 2005 Trails that I hiked: All the trails at Ohio Pyle, the LHT end to end in five days, and many others. Favorite trails: The LHT is so much fun to hike, the shelters create the perfect atmosphere for fun fun fun no matter the weather. Best time to go: ALL YEAR Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: The shelters are something that is slightly rare among trails, the flora and scenery is great, and the trail is isolated enough to make you feel wonderful and close enough to humanity to make you feel safe. What I disliked: I wish the forest in the area was older with bigger trees and though it's ok that the water provided at the pumps isn't perfect, that fact should be made very clear to first time hikers so they can prepare for it. Additional comments: If you end the trail in Ohio Pyle, which I recommend, I suggest eating at Fox's Pizza! A pizza and wedgie full of grease and fat really quench your back country cravings. Trail Name:Loyalsock Trail I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: August, 2004 Trails that I hiked: none, this is the first time I hiked in this area Favorite trails: Loyalsock Best time to go: End of spring beginning of fall, in the summer it can get pretty hot. Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 5 stars What I liked: The scenery is great, it had many good places to stop for the night. I also like the waterfalls along the trail. What I disliked: Well, towards world's end state park there was a lot of swampy ground, but this is just a minor discomfort. Trail Name:Donut Hole Trail I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: August, 103 Trails that I hiked: Donut Hole, Quehanna, Laurel Highlands, Loyalsock Favorite trails: Donut Hole, Laurel Highlands, Loyalsock Best time to go: Late Summer Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Fair Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: Scenery was great, lots of water and very few people. What I disliked: Some rocky areas were a bit boot-busting, but worth the effort. Additional comments: Submitted by: Fubar Boys from: Hershey PA Date submitted: Nov 28, 2004

Trail Name:Pinchot Trail I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: August, 2004 Trails that I hiked: Pinchot Trail Favorite trails: It was all good Best time to go: Any time would be great Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: Pretty country, well marked trails, good water! What I disliked: There wasn't anything to dislike, really Additional comments: When you get to the trail head, you find a huge sign telling you that the Pinchot Trail is marked in blue. Don't believe it. The trail is blazed orange. Don't know why they say it should be blue. Once you get past that one, the rest is really great. Trail Name:West Rim Trail I have hiked there: Several times I last hiked there in: July, 2004 Trails that I hiked: West Rim, Black Forest Trail, Golden Eagle. Pine Creek Trail (Bike) Favorite trails: They are all good. Best time to go: anytime Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Fair Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: There is great scenery, views, varied forests, wildlife, lots of water and abundant camping spots. What I disliked: When going solo a point to point trail can be inconvenient. It is nice to see a resource like the WRT being used so much but it is relatively crowded compared to most PA rails I hike. There is also a little too much “civilization” near by, especially in the north. Additional comments: I really like Northern Pennsylvania towns and the great inns. The Blackwell Hotel near the Southern Terminus is very pleasant way to finish a hike. Wellsboro is also a very nice town. Anyone who complains about inadequate trail marking is nuts. This trail gets so much use it probably does not need markings (except at roads). There is lots of great hiking in the region. Submitted by: WSH from: Bellefonte, PA Date submitted: July 28, 2004

Trail Name:Pinchot Trail I have hiked there: A few times I last hiked there in: June, 2004 Trails that I hiked: The Pinchot trail (all the orange labeled). Favorite trails: Painter Creek trail. Scrup oak trail. Best time to go: Late spring, early summer Trail marking: Fair Trail maintenance: Poor Rating: 3.5 stars What I liked: I like the fact that the trail is a continuous loop and that there is such variety of scenery. There was plenty of great tasting water to fill up on, and a good amount of wildlife. The trail's altitude was pretty consistent which is good for beginners. I've vacationed up in this area all my life and I never seen half the things that I saw along the trail. There's some good jeeping/4wheeling trails there too. What I disliked: I've hiked a lot out west, so I think I was spoiled there. I did enjoy hiking the trail, however the scenery at time was monotonous, yet at the same time beautiful. The terrain, I felt, was awful. I would estimate that it was at least 75% rock/root, 15% mud, and 10% dirt/grass. The rocks got old really quick-- make sure you wear really hard soles on your boots. There were also a lot of fallen trees to climb over. I was planning on hiking the trail in two days, but I decided to make it a day hike. Make sure you get an early start and be prepared for some sore feet. Additional comments: Choke creek is a good place to camp for a while. I think Birchstill trail has all the fallen trees. I am very glad that I hiked this trail, although not too happy that I did it in a day with a weekend pack. It's a fun place with good scenery. Submitted by: ny from: Date submitted: June 14, 2004
