The major long-distance hiking trails in the US are:

Pacific Crest Trail - 2,650 miles from Southern California to the Canadian border www.pcta.org

Continental Divide Trail - 3,100 miles along the spine of the continent from Mexico to Canada is currently about 70% complete. www.cdtrail.org

Appalachian Trail - 2,150 miles from Georgia to Maine. The Appalachian Trail Conference oversees the operations of the AT and its affiliated trail groups who do the trail maintenance. www.ATConf.org

North Country Scenic Trail - when completed, the trail will run 4,000 miles between New York and central North Dakota. It will include the Finger Lakes Trail through New York and the North Country Trail across Pennsylvania. Currently about 1,500 miles are complete. www.northcountrytrail.org

National Coast Trail - will follow the east and west coasts, the Gulf coast, the Great Lakes and the North Country Scenic Trail, plus other links for a total of about 10,000 miles. www.coasttrails.org

Other trails--not as long, but lengthy by any other standard--are either already in place or are under development. The oldest of these, the Long Trail in Vermont, has been in existence since 1921. Minnesota's Superior Hiking Trail wends its way 250 miles across the Sawtooth Mountains overlooking Lake Superior.
