Trail Name: Lake Willoughby
I have hiked there: Once
I last hiked there in: August, 2004
Trails that I hiked: Eagle Cliff On Wheeler Mountain
Favorite trails:
Best time to go:
Trail marking: Fair
Trail maintenance: Very good
Rating: 4.5 stars
What I liked: This was a first hike for my 2 girls (5 & 7). The red trail that ascends the tidal wave rock was challenging, some might say a bit dangerous, but within the reach of the young ones with LOTS of parental supervision and guidance. A HUGE confidence builder with exceptional rewards (views) for their accomplishment!
What I disliked: Decent on white trail was a poor choice during (or just after) and wet weather. Stay on the red decent where the skill level is higher, but the trip is less treacherous for young ones.
Additional comments: The views from the top are excellent for new hikers. There is little doubt that if your new hikers loved this trail when they see the bluffs opposite the lake with twice the vertical height, that you will have a hard time denying them the 'upgrade' :-) Well worth the extended drive to reach these areas!.

Trail Name: Ascutney State Park
I have hiked there: A few times
I last hiked there in: June, 2004
Trails that I hiked: Well, the Weathersfield Trail would be the most challenging.
Favorite trails: Weathersfield - I liked Cascade Falls at 1.1 miles. That is a better view than the view from the top.
Best time to go: Summertime
Trail marking: Fair
Trail maintenance: Fair
Rating: 2 stars
What I liked: Was looking to get a hike in before work on Monday
What I disliked: Long hike on the Waterbury Trail with meager views at the top.
Additional comments: I would rather hike Mt. Cardigan in NH 2 times in one day before hiking Ascutney. I ran out of 2 liters of water in my Camel Pak on a 72 degree day. It is a long hike and the top is not that exciting. However, it was a great workout.

Additional comments: Your legs will burn on the way up and down. Make sure you are well rested before you attempt to climb the rocks towards the top. I went up at a fast pace and was a little wobbly on the rocks.

What I liked: The scenery is beautiful, there is enough varied terrain that I can bring friends or family with me and find a trail comfortable for anyone. Also on my way out I can stop by their organic farm and get fresh eggs and organic salad mix. Also my dog loves that there is water near most of the trails.
What I disliked:
Comments: I recommend going to the farm and checking out the wind turbin on the property.

Trail Name: Taconic Crest Trail
I have hiked there: Several
I last hiked there in: May, 2003
Trails that I hiked: Taconic Crest, RRR Brooks, Sheperds Well, a few of the hollows.
Favorite trails: Definatly the section to the snow hole from the petersburg pass. Its a fairly easy hike at 5.4 miles and you are rewarded with several incredible views, and at the end by a giant crevice in the ground that holds snow into late spring.
Best time to go: Definatly when its dry. The bugs can get quite bad.
Trail marking: Very good
Trail maintenance: Very good
Rating: 4 stars
What I liked: If you hike the whole trail you travel through several types of forests, and there are constantly great views. One on the peaks is barren on top and you have a 360 degree view of the valleys.
What I disliked: There are many interesting side trails but they are not maintained or well marked. Unless you know the area you have to stick to the main trail.
Comments: The directions this site gives are vague. Their are many access points but the best starting point is the parking lot off from rt 346. Its on the right side when heading from petersburg ny, to pownal vermont. Its a steep climb to the top but easy from there. Another great spot is the parking lot at the top of the petersburg pass. Its located on Rt 2, where Mass, and NY meet. There are many trails that converge there. The one I like the best is across the road from the parking lot. Aslo has a steep start. I last hiked there in: August, 1999
Trails that I hiked: Pinnacle & Mt Hunger
Favorite trails: Pinnacle is a fun short hike but still will get your heart rate up. Mt Hunger is a more extended hike with some midl rock scrambling at the top. Both offer great views and Stowe Pinnancle offers nice vantage point for looking at all of Lamoille County
Best time to go: Late August
Trail marking: Fair
Trail maintenance: Fair
Rating: 4 stars
What I liked: Pinnacle is muddy and not maintained at the bottom, go when it is drier
What I disliked: Too many dogs at Pinnacle
Comments: Mt Hunger is off the beaten path, you may have it all to yourself

Area name: Mount Mansfield
Times hiked: Once
Date last hiked: Sept, 1997
Trails hiked: Long Trail
Favourite trails: only did one
Best time to go: September was great. It was a little chilly on top, but overall great.
Trail marking: Very good
Trail maintenance: Very good
Rating: 4 stars
What I liked: This is a very, very steep trail. It's more than a 2000 foot elevation gain without a single switchback. Two of my friends who came with us, who don't do a lot of hiking, quit before the summit. There is some fun rock scrambling just before the top.
What I disliked: Nothing.
