Trails: More than 260 miles of the Appalachian Trail are located in the state of Maine. The last section of the AT through the Hundred Mile Wilderness is said to be the most difficult of the entire trail.
Heading northeast from the New Hampshire border the trail traverses Goose Eye Mountain (elev 3,794 feet) and Old Speck Mountain (elev 4,180 feet) to Highway 26 near Grafton Notch.
From Grafton Notch the trail continues across Baldpate Mountain (elev 3,812 feet), two country roads and Elephant Mountain (elev 3,774 feet) to Highway 17.
A few miles later it crosses Highway 4 on the way to Saddleback Mountain (elev 4,116 feet), Sugarloaf Mountain (elev 4,23 feet) and Crocker Mountain (4,168 feet) and Highway 16/27 near Bigelow.
The trail climbs Bigelow Mountain (elev 4,150 feet) then skirts the southern shore of Flagstaff Lake and goes a few more miles to the town of Caratunk on Highway 201.
Three more towns mark the last signs of civilization before the AT enters the wilderness leading up to the southern edge of Baxter State Park.
