Hiking in the Bigelow Preserve

Advertisements

Trails: The Appalchian Trail crosses the seven summits of the Bigelow Range, ranging up to 4,150 feet in altitude. Together with three alternate trails to the summits there are about 20 miles of trails in the region. The 36,000 acre preserve is managed by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands.
A new trail under development in the region is the Maine Huts Trail, planned to span 180 miles from the Mahoosucs to Moosehead Lake. About 30 or so miles of the trail have been completed, from Sugarloaf along the east shore of Flagstaff Lake, and two backcountry huts powered by solar, wind and mini-hydro are in service.
