Hiking on Monhegan Island

Advertisements

Trails: 17 miles of trails crisscross the eastern half of the island where a descendent of Thomas Edison has preserved the old-growth evergreen forest. Trails skirt the edges of some of Maine's tallest cliffs and many of the trails are quite strenuous. The island measures only 0.7 miles by 1.7 miles so walking is the only way to get around--even bikes are not permitted on the island.
Take precautions to avoid tick bites and poison ivy.
Access fee: Round-trip ferry service is $27 adults, $14 children (2003)
Nearest town: Port Clyde, ME
Trail map: Available from local businesses and on the website
Web site: Monhegan Associates
Points of interest: The tiny island is an artist colony that has inspired two generations of Wyeths.
Other activities:
Lodging: Several inns are on the island
Camping: Not permitted on the island
Weather forecast: Port Clyde
Tourism info: Monhegan Visitor's Guide | Mid-Coast Maine Chamber
Getting to the trail: Monhegan Island is located 10 miles off the midcoast of Maine. Ferry service to the island is operated several times a day by Hardy Boat Cruises and Monhegan Boat Lines from Port Clyde and Boothbay Harbor. Reserve ahead for ferry and accommodations to avoid disappointment.
