Trails: Almost 200 miles of trails including about 120 miles of the North Country Trail, a fairly challenging route with unbridged stream crossings.
A trail to Potawatomi and Gorge Falls at Black River Harbor was designated a National Recreation Trail. The Sylvania Wilderness Area has 30 miles of foot trails through old-growth forests and around several lakes.
Five nature interpretion trails ranging in length from 1 to 2.5 miles are at different locations throughout the region.

Points of interest: Several falls are located at Black River Gorge near Black River Harbor. Watersmeet Mystery Light appears almost every night about 4 miles east of Watermeet.
Other activities: Canoeing, cross-country skiing
Lodging: Several resorts are in the Watersmeet area. Ironwood has about a dozen motels.
Camping: 27 campgrounds with a total of over 400 sites are in the National Forest. Lake Gogebic State Park has 125 sites. Backcountry camping is permitted in the Sylvania Wilderness (permit required) and on the North Country Trail.
