Trail Name: Shawangunks I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: July, 2003 Trails that I hiked: Sams point to Ice Caves Favorite trails: same. Best time to go: summer was hot, so high and in the
clouds, close to the sun. Trail marking: None Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 5 stars What I liked: small dwarf pines, blueberry bushes and
other
berry plants. Saw a buck far back in the pines. The ridge at the
top of the cliff is awesome up close, the view at the top is
incredible. We went @ 6pm. Seemed as if we could touch the sun as
it was setting. Be sure to go during daylight hours. Ice water
rushing out of the rocks at the top-miraculous. What I disliked: Exciting but scary to walk so close to
the cliff edge. Very steep climb up & climb down. Take into
account time 3 hr. to & fro the caves...don't get stuck inside at
dusk. Comments: Heard rattler from rattle snake during hike.
Inside ice caves is DARK and not trail marked, just follow the
worn dirt path from cave to cave to find your way. Could get lost
inside. Be sure not to go alone, have other adults with you. Be
sure to sign the register at the bottom of the trail and bring a
cell just incase. Submitted by: Sue G. from: Pequannock, New Jersey. Date submitted: Aug 20, 2003
