Favorite trails: BLACK FOREST!!! Best time to go: Fall or Winter Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 5 stars What I liked: The trail is challenging; you don't have
much room for lethargy. Not only is it gorgeous PA wildlife, but
when you're done, you've accomplished something. What I disliked: Not closer to home! Additional comments: 42 miles in 24 hours!!!
The best weekend warrior path starts at the trailhead moving
right, and then following that until the road that takes you to
foster hollow, up foster follow (great ascent) then a steady
descent until the trailhead, about 13 miles - enough to have at
least half a day of relaxation! Submitted by: TJ from: Lansdale, PA Date submitted: July 21, 2005

Trail Name: Black Forest Trail I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: July, 2005 Trails that I hiked: West Rim Trail, Naval Run Trail Favorite trails: West Rim Best time to go: Spring Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Fair Rating: 2 stars What I liked: Views along the trail were good, though not
as spectaculr as West Rim Trail. Given the choice, I'd hike the
West Rim Trail any day. Easier, better campsites and better
scenery. What I disliked: Much too rugged for a hot, humid 90
degree July day. Climb up to ridge from Naval Run was a killer.
Campsite listed on BFT topo at top of Slide Hollow should be
removed from map. Worst camp site I have stayed in 12 years of
backpacking. Actually, it's more of a tiny, tiny, rock strewn
clearing that sits in and beside the slide hollow stream bed.
Large enough for one 2-man tent or two bivvies. Additional comments: Way cool wildlife! Saw two bears in
two days, deer, boatloads of toads, various rodents and a handful
of neon orange salamanders. I'll have to look them up. Submitted by: Tim Boyle from: Hanover, Pa Date submitted: July 7, 2005

Trail Name: Black Forest Trail I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: May, 2005 Trails that I hiked: Not Many in this area Favorite trails: The BFT Best time to go: The Spring Time Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Fair Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: The scenery was amazing at some of the
vistas, i also really enjoyed the smell of wild flowers. What I disliked: The are extremely challenging Additional comments: The trail was amazing, but it was
very hard it is alot of uphill, i have hiked out west and this is
the hardest trail i have every done. It was very worth it to get
the smell of wildflowers and the vistas. If you are going to do
the trail make sure you are in good shape Submitted by: Dante from: Cleveland Ohio Date submitted: May 30, 2005

Trail Name: Black Forest Trail I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: May, 2004 Trails that I hiked: Black Forest Trail in entirety Favorite trails: N/A - Only hiked the BFT Best time to go: Unkown Trail marking: Fair Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: the layout was great - not a whole lot of
old woods roads. Mainly hiking paths. Great camp sites! What I disliked: Trail markings were tough to find at some
points. Without the trail guide, there were several points where
you would have to hike one way only to find out the trail went
the other way. Additional comments: The vista at around mile 30-31 which
looks up Pine Creek is absolutely gorgeous on a sunny
afternoon! Submitted by: Nick from: Philadelphia, PA Date submitted: June 1, 2004

Trail Name: Black Forest Trail I have hiked there: Once I last hiked there in: Apr, 2004 Trails that I hiked: Little Slate Run trail
BFT 34.4 to 39.
Foster Hollow trail
Francis road cut off
BFT 8.4 to 0.0 Favorite trails: The sections we hiked were all very
nice Best time to go: Late April or mid October Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: This area is unspoiled and despite the
regular use. This trail system also lends itself to a trip that
is very challenging but at the same time offers several 'bail
out' points. It is a good place to test oneself and is very
pretty. What I disliked: There is not enough parking at the trail
heads. Additional comments: Little Slate Run trail is a good way
to get into the park if you arrive late in the day. The trail is
washed out in several places but one can hike an old logging road
on the north slope after passing the private land boundary.
Foster hollow is a rough trail and has some trees down on it. Submitted by: Venture Crew 2558 from: Edinburg OH Date submitted: April 27, 2004

tretcherous yet fun switchbacks, great places to camp on the way.
nice watterholes for swiming... "CRAY FISH THE SIZE OF
LOBSTERS" What I disliked: Comments: do not try to take a shortcut off of the
steepests stright down. we ended up in the old part of the trail.

Trail Name: Black Forest Trail I have hiked there: Few I last hiked there in: Oct, 2000 Trails that I hiked: Just the main trail. Favorite trails: Best time to go: Has to be October. The leaves are at
their peak, and the views of the valleys are INCREDIBLE! And, in
October, there aren't any bugs. Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 5 stars What I liked: The scenery is the best. Also like the
challenge of the steep, variable terrain. Forest is beautiful.
Lot's of water. What I disliked: Can you move it closer to the
Adirondacks? Comments: It would be great if a local chamber of commerce
or other group would provide shuttle service so we could leave
our vehicles in a more secure area. Too remote, no parking last
time I was there. Submitted by: TA from: Dolgeville, NY Date submitted: Jan 22, 2004

Trail Name: Black Forest Trail I have hiked there: Several I last hiked there in: Oct, 2000 Trails that I hiked: Entire BFT, part or all of most BFT
side trails (Will, Shay, Gas Line, Foster Hollow). Also have
hiked the short (9 mile) Golden Eagle Trail across Pine Creek
from the BFT. Favorite trails: Main BFT is great, especially descent
into and out of Callahan Run (mile 25-27) and plummeting descents
along narrow ridge lines near mile 0-1 and 40. Best time to go: March - May, Sept - Oct, cool June days
(Mtn. Laurel season) Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 5 stars What I liked: Scenery is a great mix of hills, stream
bottoms. Not crowded. Difficult enough to be challenging but
still hikeable by a person in decent physical condition. (My
daughter hiked some 1-2 mile stretches at the age of 4-5.) What I disliked: Confusing reroutings in vicinity of mile
0-0.35 and again near mile 7, both places where Slate Run is
crossed. The "old" BFT near mile 7 should be marked as a side
trail -- it is wonderful and scenic but hard to follow because
blazes were blacked out. Comments: Hotel Manor near mile 0 is a good place to get a
bite to eat and something to drink after a long hike. Submitted by: MJM from: Holland, MI Date submitted: Oct 23, 2003

I will be hiking more of it this year and will keep you
posted Favorite trails: Best time to go: last few weeks of june Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: beautiful views What I disliked: the new route to foster hollow
stinks. Comments: the last few weeks of june are great for anyone
who wants to see lots of mt. laurel. if you are feeling
adventurious try to follow the old switch backs up to foster
hollow. you can easily follow a well worn path, and the trail
markers aren't well painted over. the views are A+++++ Submitted by: Chachsand from: Date submitted: June 15, 2003
