Hiking Haystack & Belvidere Mountains

Trails: Haystack (elevation 3,223 feet) & Belvidere Mountains (elev. 3,360) near Montgomery Center are each a challenging 2- to 3-mile climb from the trailheads but have rewarding views from the top. The trail forms a section of the Long Trail. Two side trails, the Foresters and Frank Post, can be combined to make a 6-mile loop up to Tillotson Camp and Belvidere.
Access fee: None, but membership in the GMC helps support the trail.

Points of interest: Belvidere has a restored fire lookout tower at its summit. Composting outhouse at Tillotson Camp
Other activities:
Lodging: Tillotson Camp, midway between Haystack and Belvidere, has a few bunks. Several inns and B&Bs are located in Montgomery Center.
Camping: A couple of campsites are at Tillotson Camp

Getting to the trail: Haystack trailhead is southeast of Montgomery Center on Highway 58 (Hazen's Notch Road). Belvidere trailhead is east of the junction of Highway 109 on Highway 118. The Frank Post and Foresters trailhead are on a side road near Tillotson Mill.
