Hiking the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Trails: A total of 50 miles of hiking trails are located on a dozen islands and a 4.5-mile trail extends along the mainland shore. Islands with longer tails are:
- Basswood Island - a 5.5 mile loop
- Oak Island - 5 trails totaling 11 miles
- Outer Island - 7 mile and 1.7 miles
- Stockton Island - 6 trails totaling 4.5 miles

Points of interest: Sea caves (rock formation carved into the cliffs by the action of the waves) are located on two of the islands and along the mainland. They are visible only by boat or in winter when the ice is thick enough to walk on (check the ice report tape beforehand). Several lighthouses are located on the islands.

Lodging: Bayfield has several choices of accommodation
Camping: No campground in the mainland section of the park, but camping is allowed on the islands with a permit (reservations are advised). Several commercial campgrounds are on the mainland.

Getting to the trail: Apostle Islands Cruise Service operates a water taxi for up to six persons during the summer. A shuttle service also operates from Bayfield to Sand and Raspberry Islands in July and August.
