I have hiked there: A few times
I last hiked there in: Sept, 103
Trails that I hiked: North Country Trail- Swedish Settlement segment
St. Peters Dome/Morgan Falls Trail
Favorite trails: Swedish Settlement Segment of North Country Trail
St. Peters Dome/Morgan Falls NF Trail
Best time to go: Fall
Trail marking: Fair
Trail maintenance: Fair
Rating: 4.5 stars
What I liked: The fall colors were spectacular. On the Swedish Settlement trail there were three scenic overlooks. The views were 360 degrees. The colors were unbelievable. The trail had a few soft spots and one section that was overgrown, but this is a wilderness trail and that is expected. An Adirondack shelter can be found just east of the Marengo river. A little further on the trail a sign points to a 100 year old road that leads to the abandoned fields and old foundations that were the Swedish Settlement.
The St. Peters Dome/Morgan Falls trail leads first to Morgan falls, a 70 foot cascade over a red granite cliff. The trail then leads to St. Peters dome, a red granite outcropping that has a sheer face to the north. 20 miles distant can be seen, Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands. The route to the top has exposed roots and rocks that force you to keep your head down when all you want to do is see the huge pines, maples and birches as well as the hanging valley.
What I disliked: I guess, if I had to find a criticism, it would be the ankle twisting trail. But this is a wilderness setting.
Additional comments: Neither of these trails is easy to locate, but they are worth the trip. Stop at the Chequamegon National Forest Office in Glidden first to get maps and directions.
