What do the headings on the ratings tables mean?
The meanings of the headings are as follows:
Name - name of the destination (park, trail system or cross-country ski area) where the trail--or network of trails--is located.
Length - total length of all the trails at the destination in miles.
Nbr of ratings - number of ratings submitted for each particular trail by people who has used them.
Average rating - average of the ratings (out of 5 stars) for a particular destination.

Why are there no ratings for some of the destinations?
Ratings are submitted by people who have used the trails. We have been compiling ratings for a few years but receive only several ratings each week so it will take some time to accumulate ratings for all destinations. Help improve this site by submitting a rating for a destination you have visited.

How do I submit a rating for a particular destination?
On the detail page for each destination there is a link marked "Rate this Area" which leads to a rating form. Fill out as much of the form as possible and then click the Submit button. Your rating should be posted to the site within a week or so, once it has been checked for content.

How up-to-date are the trail listings?
We do our best to keep the listings as current as possible but it is a daunting task with so many to maintain. Check the date on the bottom of each page to see when the page was last updated. Click on the link to the listing's website (if there is one) to see if they are still in operation. If there is no link check with the local tourist bureau before going.
If you find that a destination is no longer in operation, please notify us by clicking on the "update" link at the bottom of the listing's page and submitting the form.
Prices for trail fees, lodging, etc are not updated annually and may be out of date. In most cases the year that the price was last verified is indicated in brackets after the price.

Where do I get a map/description of the trails?
We do not have the resources to supply trail maps or detailed trail descriptions for each destination. Our main objective is to provide a directory of trails with a brief synopsis of each destination. Most trail listings have a contact where maps can be obtained, such as a park office, tourist association or trail organization. For certain destinations a trail map can be downloaded from the trail organization's website.

How do I add a new trail destination, lodging, club, etc. to this site?
On each regional page there is a link labelled "Add a Trail", "Add a Lodging", etc. Click on the link to access a form that you then fill out with the information for your listing on A1 Trails. Submit one form for each destination--do not submit one for each trail at a destination. It may take several weeks or even longer for your submission to be added to our listings.

Why are most of the ratings favorable? Are the unfavorable reviews removed?
We publish all serious ratings that are submitted regardless of their viewpoint. For some unknown reason it appears that people are more inclined to give favourable ratings. Occasionaly, an unfavorable rating may be removed if the reviewer doesn't give a reason for the bad rating, or if the reason is given as "too easy" or "too difficult". Those trails may be perfectly fine for people of a different level of ability.

When I click on a trail on the regional trails page nothing happens.
When you click on the trail name in the ratings table or on the map, details about the trail should appear in a second pop-up window. If you don't see the trail detail window, it may be hidden under the main window. You need a browser that is at least version 4 of Netscape or Internet Explorer and it must have Javascript-enabled (not turned off). If your browser has a pop-up killer to prevent pop-up ads, it will prevent the second window from appearing.

Are the trails accessible to people with physical limitations, i.e.: those in wheelchairs?
Most trails are not wheelchair accessible, with the exception of some nature trails and most rail trails. Check with the organization in charge of the trails for more specific information.

Are dogs allowed on the trails?
Dogs are not permitted in many parks because of the possibility of disturbing the wildlife. They are also barred from almost all groomed ski trails because they can mess up the trails. Check with the organization in charge of the trails for more specific information.

What are the snow conditions on cross-country trails?
We do not have the resources to provide that information directly, but in many cases there is a phone number or link provided in the listings where that information can be obtained.

What is a multi-use trail?

For the purposes of this website we define "multi-use trail" to be a trail that is either a former railroad (a rail trail) or a trail with an applied surface such as gravel dust or pavement. This site lists only trails that are primarily intended for human-powered transport.
