Maine has three regions that are popular recreation destinations: the White Mountains, the North woods and the rugged coast. Sporting camps scattered throughout central and northern Maine were originally intended for hunting and fishing but now cater to outdoor enthusiasts year round. A few of the camps are not accessible by automobile.

Resorts and Inns

Moosehead Lake Area - several resorts and sporting camps are located around Maine's largest lake:

  • Little Lyford Ponds Lodge, Greenville - historic camp built in 1874 is now operated by the Appalachian Mountain Club, 7 log cabins and 12-bed dorm, canoeing, hiking, backcountry skiing, and snowshoeing in the Hundred Mile Wilderness, winter access is by skiing 7 miles, $$-$$$ pp AP (2009)
  • Medawisla Lodge, Greenville - another AMC lodge about 16 miles from Little Lyford has 7 log cabins, lodge-to-lodge trips, $$$ pp AP (2009)
  • The Birches, Rockwood - 16 log cabins, whitewater rafting, snowshoeing, xc skiing

Millinocket/Baxter State Park Area - hiking, mtn biking, snowshoeing, xc skiing. Lots of lodges, motels, etc. in Millinocket area.

Sugarloaf Resort, Carrabassett Valley - condos, inn and hotel at alpine ski center, hiking, mtn biking, snowshoeing, alpine & xc skiing, Nearby lodging 1-800-THE-AREA, $$$+

Maine Huts, Carrabassett Valley/Moosehead Lake - backcountry huts (powered by solar, wind and mini-hydro) on a 180-mile trail hiking, mtn biking, kayaking, snowshoeing, xc skiing, $$ pp MAP

Northern Outdoors, Caratunk - 18 rooms & cabins, campground, restaurant, brewery, canoeing, hiking (Appalachian Trail), fishing, hunting, swimming, whitewater rafting, wildlife viewing, snowmobiling, $-$$$ pp

Saddleback Ski Area, Rangeley - condos at ski hill, motels in town, alpine and xc skiing

Back Country Excursions , Parsonsfield - lodge, hostel, campground, mountain biking in the White Mountains with or without guide $$+ pp MAP

Bethel Area - hiking in the eastern White Mountains, Appalachian Trail and Grafton Notch, xc skiing at several areas. several accommodations are available

Bar Harbor - dozens of lodgings are located next to Acadia National Park, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing on carriage paths

Hostels

Most hostels are affiliated with the Maine branch of Hostelling International. Rates are per person for the year indicated in brackets. Hostels generally do not provide linens, blankets or towels.
