Maine has a national park, a national wildlife refuge, about 30 state parks and a portion of White Mountains National Forest. Map of Maine![]() State Parks in MaineBaxter State Park, by far the largest state park in Maine, is a huge wilderness area containing Mount Katahdin, at 5,267 feet the highest peak in the state. Katahdin marks the northern end of the Appalachian Trail and the southern terminus of the International AT that heads north to the tip of the Gaspe peninsula in Canada. Other parks with signifcant trails are:
National Parks and Forests in MaineAcadia National Park's rocky headlands overlooking the pounding surf of the Atlantic Ocean. The former Rockefeller estate has more than 60 miles of carriage roads and trails for bicycling, hiking and cross-country skiing. Two campgrounds have unserviced sites. Passes must be purchased for entry to the park. White Mountain National Forest offers many miles of trails for hiking. Two campgrounds are situated in this section of the forest. Permits are required for parking at trailheads. Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge in southeastern Maine has about 50 miles of hiking trails.
