Much of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, or UP as the locals call it, and the northern Lower Peninsula are state and national forest lands. Ottawa and Hiawatha National Forests take up a large portion of the UP while the Huron-Manistee National Forest predominates on the Lower Peninsula. Also on the UP, Porcupine Mountains State Park is the largest of the state parks. Isle Royale National Park, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore each offer many miles of hiking trails. Isle Royale is reached by a long ferry ride to the north side of Lake Superior. Map of MichiganThe map below shows only approximate locations of trails. ![]()
