Michigan has about 96 state parks, several state forests, three national park and three national forests.

State Parks and Forests in Michigan

Michigan's state parks offer a wide variety of outdoor activities. Some of the parks that are popular destinations are:

Several long-distance state trails are great for bicycling from town to town. See Rail Trails for more info.

Passes are required to enter most state parks and to use state trails. Most of Michigan's state parks have campgrounds. Many state parks and recreation areas also rent rustic cabins and tents for overnight accommodation.

Much of the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula are state forest land. There are about 900 miles of recreation pathways and about 150 rustic campgrounds throughout the state forests.

National Parks and Forests in Michigan

Isle Royale National Park is located in northern Lake Superior, a long ferry ride from the Keweenaw Peninsula. It has 165 miles of hiking trails.

Pictured Rocks National Park on the Upper Peninsula has interesting rock formations and a 42-mile hiking trail along the lakeshore.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on the Lower Peninsula has 55 miles of trails for hiking and xc skiing.

Ottawa National Forest has more than 200 miles of trails that are suitable for hiking and mountain biking.

Hiawatha National Forest has about 100 miles of trails for hiking and xc skiing

Huron-Manistee National Forest has about 300 miles of trails for hiking and xc skiing

Day or annual passes are required to enter national parks. Parking passes may be required at trailheads and picnic areas in certain national forests, the Huron-Manistee National Forest for one.
