Name of area: Rifle River Recreation Area I have ridden there: Several times I last rode there in: Oct, 2003 Trails that I have ridden: All of them and any I could trails I could discover on my own. Best time to go: Late Summer Trail marking: Very good Trail maintenance: Fair Stars: 5 Favorite trails: Devil's Wash Basin. Extremely challenging, muddy, fun ride for those who like to challenge themselves. I would rate this for experts only. Dual slalom tires might help out a little too. Comments: I love this area, a lot of fun. There are trails for leisure rides, and there are trails for challenging oneself. Several areas can be ridden, (i.e. make your own trails). Some of the trails have loose gravel, a lot of the area is hilly too, but it is something a beginner could ride. Possible hazards include loose gravel, hikers, several areas can be washed out near Devil's Basin, and Grousehead trails.
There are also very nice and modern facilities for overnight stays. Don't like roughing it? Stay in their new cabins, very nice. Friendly people, very helpful, enjoyable time.
Also, there are three lakes inside of the campground for a relaxing swim, kayaking, or paddelboating (no motors allowed, private access). Devoe, Grebe, Grousehaven, lakes are the nicest/largest. The smaller ones include Lodge, Hewett, Mallard, Pintail, and Lost lakes are smaller.
Very pretty area, large. I would suggest these trails for beginners to get their feet wet, and also for experts/masochists who enjoy torturing themselves on loose and loamy steep rises. I love this area, very beautiful. If anyone has questions, kayaker53087@sbcglobal.net Submitted by: MAP from: Midland, MI Date submitted: Jan 30, 2005
