Area name: Paul Bunyan State Forest
Number of times that I have ridden there: Several times
Date that I last rode there: Oct, 2001
Trails that I have ridden: The Martineau Recreation Trail is our favorite. There is ample parking and a several trails that start out of that area. The trails range widely in difficulty from beginner to advanced riders. The hills are not too steep, but the trails are quite technical. While there are numerous trails (68 miles in the network), we recommend beginning with the Martineau Recreation Area. On weekends, there are some motocross riders on the trails, but it's usually not a problem. We yield the trail to them, as well as help them maintain it. The local bike shop in Walker (about 10 miles from highways 64 and 34) hosts shop rides on Thursday and Sunday nights throughout the summer that are open to the public. Helmets are required. There is no charge to participate.
Best time to go: May through October
Trail marking: Poor
Trail maintenance: Fair
Stars: 5
Favourite trails: I like all 68 miles. Very diverse riding with wide ranges in difficulty and challenge.
Comments: There are some washouts and crevice areas that riders need to watch for. On rare occasions, a tree may fall over the trail from a storm, but it is usually taken care of by those who maintain the trail. Eat, drink and stay in Walker. Very cool town on a very cool lake (Leech Lake).
