Area name: Bethpage State Park Number of times riding the trail: A few times I last rode there in: May, 2004 Trails that I have ridden: #9, #8, and #13, along the paved path, and assorted other locations (I got a little lost because each path looked more interesting than the next). Favorite trails: All are favorable; there are some steep hills nestled deep within the park that are a lot of fun for a fearless novice such as myself. Best time to go: All times, I would think, except when there is snow or ice on the ground, or it is raining heavily. Slight drizzle is inconsequential because of all the trees. The shade keeps the trails semi-damp all year, anyway. Trail marking: Fair Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: The scenery is beautiful (am I supposed to be looking at scenery while riding??), there are some rabbits and hawks, the trails are well-maintained and interesting, and there are lots of bailouts. Plus, you're always fairly near "civilization." If you feel too lost, just follow the traffic sounds of the Bethpage State Pkwy. or rt. 135 to get your bearings (both roads lead north-south). What I disliked: Trail markers not as clear as I would have liked, but perhaps this will keep the population of the trails down. Comments: If you enter the trails from the streets in Farmingdale instead of via the park entrance, there is no fee to ride. Submitted by: Miriam from: Lake Grove, NY Date submitted: May 8, 2004

Area name: Bethpage State Park Number of times riding the trail: A few times I last rode there in: July, 2003 Trails that I have ridden: Most of them Favorite trails: Not sure of names Best time to go: Probably year round, as long as there's no snow. Trail marking: Fair Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 1 star What I liked: Good for fast, easy riding, good for neophyte riders. What I disliked: Unchallenging for experienced riders, pretty boring. Reminds me of a large vacant lot stuck in the middle of the suburban nightmare that is Long Island Comments: Watch out for the small hand-made jumps which sometimes seem to pop-up out of nowhere. Area name: Bethpage State Park Number of times riding the trail: Several times I last rode there in: August, 2003 Trails that I have ridden: Just about all of them
Favorite trails: Lots of great single track on the S and W sides of the main lot. To the NW theres some great freeride obtacles and jumps for those more adventurous types,
Best time to go: Any time of year is great. Don't go after heavy rain.
Trail marking: Poor
Trail maintenance: Fair
Rating: 4 stars What I liked: Lots of swoopy narrow single track (miles and miles). What I disliked: Poorly marked.. easy to get lost, but theres enough traffic that if you're unfamiliar with the park some is bound to come along who is. Not very well mapped. Comments: Trails can be rather technical. Fallen trees are not considered bad maintenance- just something to make the trail more challenging. Although some trails are not too difficult, I would not recommend this park for the novice or first time rider Submitted by: B from: Patchogue, New York Date submitted: Sept 8, 2003
