Area name: Frick Park Number of times riding the trail: Weekly I last rode there in: July, 2004 Trails that I have ridden: All Favorite trails: All Best time to go: anytime Trail marking: None Trail maintenance: Fair Rating: 5 stars What I liked: trails are 10 ft from my house. Somewhat challenging. Great for rigid single speeds.
What I disliked: The people who try to maintain the trials. LET THEM BE. The obstacles make the trials better and make the weanies ride elsewhere Comments: STOP MAINTAINING THE TRAILS!!!!!!!!! Submitted by: d from: PGH PA Date submitted: July 19, 2004

Area name: Frick Park Number of times riding the trail: Weekly I last rode there in: June, 2003 Trails that I have ridden: All of them. (I'm a local) Favorite trails: Rollercoaster, Nature drop, Iron gate, and variants of these trails. Best time to go: When they're DRY; late summer/fall mostly. Trail marking: None Trail maintenance: Fair Rating: 4.5 stars What I liked: Highly accessible location in city parks; intertwining nature of the trails makes countless combinations possible while riding. Downhills are moderately technical and provide a diverse range of challenges. Inner Frick Park during the Summer and Fall is magnificent scenery-wise, and abundant in wildlife; plenty of beautiful greenery to ride through! What I disliked: During wet seasons, or even sometimes after one hard rain, the trails become extremely muddy and practically unrideable. Many hardened clay banks become extremely slippery and hazardous; riding during these periods is extremely destructive to the trails! (Read: Pick a dry weekend to visit!) Comments: HAZARDS: Riding bikes in places other than the paved roads in Frick is officially against the law, and so this should be taken into account while interacting with other trailgoers as well as the occasional mounted cop. Dog-walkers and hikers sometimes use the bike trails as well, so a safe speed should be maintained especially in the first couple hundred yards of a trail. The dog-walkers tend to let their dogs loose, although this too is illegal, and so riding quickly past a leashless dog is just asking for trouble. Finally, I can't stress this enough: DONT RIDE THE TRAILS WHEN THEYRE SOAKED!!! Not only is it dangerous and less enjoyable, but the permanent erosion damage it causes to the trails is too great a cost for a single day of riding. I personally maintain the trails (others may do the same individually), and such erosion is difficult, sometimes impossible to repair. Do everyone a favor and practice patience!
RECOMMENDED ROUTES: The main trail system can be picked up behind the Frick playground area on Beechwood, by riding the paved road all the way to the back, then taking the right gravel trail down into a small field, and into the back. A new multitrack there winds down the hillside, but early on the left you'll find the entrance to the original Rollercoaster trail. Because the multitrack was cut through the forest recently, it bisects all of the bike trails which run down the hillside; you'll periodically empty out onto it during rides on these trails, and so you can use it to "mix-n-match" trail segments. Another good trail begins by the Nature center, right below the round wooden observation deck. It winds along the hillside and offers several quick descents as exits. Not to be missed! Area name: Frick Park Number of times riding the trail: Weekly I last rode there in: Nov, 2002 Trails that I have ridden: Most of them. Don't know the names, as everyone has different names for them. Favorite trails: The roller-coasters...the trails that exit near the Irish Center...there are too many good ones to say. Best time to go: All year round. Trail marking: None Trail maintenance: Very good Rating: 5 stars What I liked: Nice rolling singletrack, hills (up and down), very technical in some spots, the "North Shore" obstacles practically in my own backyard. Riding with friends is a blast. What I disliked: I dislike that I can't ride them enough.
