New York has about 200 state parks and a small national forest. The Adirondack and Catskill Parks and other forest preserves are administered separately from the state parks. Passes are required to enter most state parks. About one-third of New York's state parks have campgrounds. Several parks have rustic cabins that can be rented for overnight accommodations. Inns are located in three parks: Bear Mountain, Saratoga Springs and Letchworth. Forest Preserves in New YorkAdirondack Park, Catskill Park and several wilderness areas are managed by the Department of Environmental Conservation. Adirondack Park is the largest nature preserve east of the Mississippi and has about 2,000 miles of hiking trails. More than 50 campgrounds are located in the Adirondack and Catskill Parks, only one of which offers water and sewage hook-ups. National Forests in New YorkFinger Lakes National Forest is one of the smaller federal forest lands and has several trails for hiking and skiing. There are three small campgrounds with no services.
