Montour Trail

Trail description: Montour Trail is a multi-use recreational rail-trail that skirts Pittburgh in a semi-circle for 46 miles from Coraopolis to Clairton. As of 2008, more than 40 miles of the trail has been completed with a gravel surface but several gaps remain to be filled in. Check the trail's website for the latest status and the bypass routes.
The Panhandle Trail which runs 29 miles between Carnegie, PA, and Weirton, WV, intersects the trail near the town of McDonald. A 4-mile section of the Montour Trail near McMurray is also known as the Arrowhead Trail. The south end of the Montour Trail is linked to McKeesport and the Great Allegheny Passage.

Facilities on the trail: Water fountains and portable toilets are located every few miles along the trail. Restaurants are in several of the towns.

Camping: Raccoon State Park is a few miles west of the airport.

Getting to the trail: Coraopolis is about 10 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. Clairton is about 12 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. There are parking lots every few miles along the trail. A connector trail is planned to link the airport to the Montour Trail. The T, Pittsburgh's light-rail transit, runs south from the city to the town of Library and bike are permitted at no extra charge. Both Coraopolis and McKeesport are served by Pittsburgh buses that are equipped with bike racks. See Bicycling in Pittsburgh for getting to and around Pittsburgh.
