Trail description: The multi-use Badger State Trail runs 40 miles south from Madison to the Illinois State line where the Jane Addams Trail continues 12 miles south to Freeport, Illinios. The Badger State Trail crosses the Sugar River Trail in Monticello and Cheese Country Recreation Trail in Monroe. In Madison the trail connects to the Military Ridge Trail via the Capital City Trail (scheduled for completion in Spring, 2010). Opened in 2007, the trail occupies the former bed of the Illinois Central Railroad. Points of interest: The 1,200-foot-long Stewart Tunnel in the town of Exeter (requires bike light). Capital Springs State Recreation Area in Madison has 54 sites.
