Trails: The University of Illinois's Allerton Park & Retreat Center offers 22 km (14 miles) of ungroomed trails for cross-country skiing. There are seven loop trails through the 1,500-acre park and formal gardens. Unfortunately, there is no bridge connecting the three trails on the south side of the river with those on the north. Allerton is one of the 7 Wonders of Illinois, a National Natural Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are two entrances to the park: the north entrance (leading to the visitor center and retreat center) and the south entrance. To get to the north entrance from Exit 164 of the I-72: go a few hundred feet east on Bridge Street, turn west on Route 47 (follow brown park signs). After 2 miles turn left on County Road 625, go 1 mile to the T-intersection, turn right on County Farm Road (1550N), then left on Old Timber Road and continue to the visitor center.
