Trails: Nine Mile Forest's 30 km (18 miles) of trails are groomed for cross-country skiing (classic and skating) by the county parks department. The trails range in difficulty ratings from Beginner to Expert. There are 6 km of lighted trails for evening skiing on most nights.
Trail fees: XC skiing: Adults $12 weekends/$9 weekdays, students (12 & older) $7; snowshoeing $5 (winter 2009-10)

Location of trails: Nine Mile Forest is located 5 miles southwest of Wausau. Take Exit 188 off Highway I-39, travel 3.5 miles west on Co. Highway "N", then go 1.5 miles south on Red Bud Road to the parking lot on the west side of the road.

What I liked: The trails have a wide variety of difficulty from easy to difficult. The difficult trails will present a challenge to even the most decorated x-c skier for hills as well as distance. Other trails may not interest expert skiers.

Likes and dislikes: Wide flat trail system groomed for skate and two stride lanes. Excellent grooming machine. Plenty of room for everyone. All wooded, pines and hardwoods. Rolling hills, enough for a workout, but nothing overwhelming. Excellent facilities. Well worth cover charge.
