Alaska has over a dozen cross-country ski areas, most of which are located in the Anchorage area. The Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage is responsible for grooming four connected trail systems in the city.

Backcountry Skiing

Many of Alaska's wilderness areas are suitable for skiing. Pick up a map of backcountry trails before heading out--maps are seldom available at the trailhead. You may be able to purchase maps of parks at the nearest ranger station. Otherwise try the local sporting goods stores. Be sure to follow the winter safety procedures.

CAUTION Avalanche Danger: Before skiing on backcountry trails in mountainous areas, follow the avalanche safety procedures, check with the nearest ranger station and consult the region's avalanche advisory. It is vitally important that each person in the group carry avalanche rescue equipment and know how to use it.
