Backcountry Skiing

Many of New Mexico's wilderness areas are suitable for backcountry skiing. When skiing in backcountry areas, it is especially important to follow the basic winter safety precautions. Pick up a map of backcountry trails at the nearest ranger station--maps are seldom available at the trailhead.

AvalancheCAUTION Avalanche Danger: Before skiing on backcountry trails in mountainous areas, take the necessary avalanche safety precautions, check with the nearest ranger station and consult the region's avalanche advisory. It is extremely important that each person in the group carry avalanche rescue equipment and have taken an avalanche training course.

Southwest Nordic Center has one yurt at Taos and four yurts in Cumbres Pass just north of the Colorado/New Mexico border, $65-125 (2003).
