Utah's lower elevations remain virtually snow-free all year but there is plenty of powder in the mountain ranges. Utah lays claim to the title of "the greatest snow on earth" and will soon have a chance to prove it when it hosts the Winter Olympics in 2002.

Utah is home to several cross-country ski areas, most of which are located in the Salt Lake City region. The exception is Bryce Canyon National Park in the south where the trails overlook the multi-colored "hoodoos" in the canyon.

Backcountry Skiing

If you want to break your own trails, there are plenty of opportunities in the Wasatch and La Sal mountains where there are backcountry huts for rent. Pick up a map of backcountry trails at the nearest ranger station as maps are seldom available at the trailhead.
Powder Ridge Ski Touring - operates two yurts in Northern Utah's Wasatch Mountains
La Sal Mountain Hut System - operates three huts in the La Sal Mountains

AvalancheCAUTION Avalanche Danger: Before skiing on backcountry trails in mountainous areas, follow the standard avalanche safety precedures and basic winter safety precautions. Avalanche bulletins: Cyberspace Avalanche Center | Westwide Avalanche Network | Utah Avalanche Forecast Center
