What I liked: Some of the best XC skiing I've ever been to/raced at, they redid some stuff to make it better accomodating to people (like bigger and more parking) very few places can ofer the sheer amount and quality of these trails!
What I disliked: not many, can be a bit crowded on a race day, may have to pay later if people dont donate. BUY A PIN!!
Comments: MOOSE always a moose near by, they should go and shoot a bunch of them to clean em out, cant tell ya how many times ive been taken to go off the trail and around the moose during a race or sit there with 10 or so other racers freezing our butts off trying to get the moose to move off the trail

Name of XC Area: White Mountains NRA
Area number: AK1
Times that I have skied there: A few times
I last skied there in: Mar, 2004
Trails that I skied: Ski trail, Wickersham Creek trail, Big Bend trail, Colorado Creek trail, Windy Gap trail, Fossil Creek trail
My favorite trails: Big Bend to Windy Gap Cabin
Trail marking: Very good
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 5 stars
What I liked: The country surrounding these trails is spectacular, remote and pristine. The summits of the White Mountains tower above you and the views on a clear day extend 100 miles. Many of the trails are on top of the ridge lines, and the views of mountains, river drainages and meadows are world class. The addition of rustic but comfortable cabins every 10 - 20 miles is a real plus. Few users except locals, but if more people knew about this area it would be very highly rated.
What I disliked: Ridge top trails can be cold and windy, and snow can be sparce and drifted. You have to be willing to share these trails with snowmachiners, sled dog teams and ski-jourers, but everybody gets along OK.
Comments: Watch out for overflow ice and occasional open water under snow bridges.

My favorite trails: From APU land across Norther Lights Blvd to the Lodge at Russian Jack
Trail marking: Very good
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 4 stars

What I disliked: Nothing
Comments: Infrequent moose are the only possible hazards. Attractions: Excellent beginner trails with flatlands, hills, bridges and tunnels. Slopes for bunny skiers at Lodge.

Name of area: Nancy Lake State Recreation Area
Area number: AK4
Times that I have skied there: A few times
I last skied there in: Mar, 2002
Trails that I skied: Rhein Lake, Jano Pond
My favorite trails: Jano Pond - nice long open country ski
Trail marking: Fair
Trail grooming: Fair
Rating: 4 stars
What I liked: These trails wind through beautiful lake, marsh and birch forest contry with some hills for variety. These very peaceful, little traveled trails are perfect for a relaxed ski and ski picnic. Snow conditions are much more stable than in Anchorage as the weather is a bit colder and sunnier.
What I disliked: Grooming will be improved this year as Birch Pond Lodge (a new nordic ski lodge) located on the northern boundary of Nancy Lakes State Park will be doing some grooming of the Rhein Lake and Jano Pond Loops.
Comments: Only hazards are possible moose confrontations and questionable lake ice conditions. These trails however are located on ground or marsh.

What I liked: The trails aren't your momma's. Steep hills, spectacular views, endless mile of trails to explore. I have seen lynx, moose, and bears.
What I disliked: Some rednecks shoot the trail signs and maps (universal alaska problem)
Comments: The chalet now serves real coffee and cocoa!
