American BirkebeinerNorth America's most popular nordic event is the American Birkebeiner. Each year over 6,000 skiers enter the Birkie and its shorter cousin, the Korteloppet. During its more than 25 years of existence the Birkie has become the yardstick against which skiers measure their fitness and performance. The Birkie is also a stop on the Worldloppet tour (see International Events) and is open to all skiers. The Birkie Trail starts near the Telemark resort in Cable, Wisconsin, and wends its way south over dozens of hills to the town of Hayward. Waves of skiers start at five-minute intervals. Skiers are assigned to waves according to their finish times in previous years or at qualifying events such as the Mora Vasaloppet.
