Number of ratings for this region: 16

16   Top   Down     Rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

Name of XC Area: Sunday River Ski Area
Area number: ME15
Times that I have skied there: Weekly
I last skied there in: Jan, 2005
Trails that I skied: Inn Loops (a combination of several trails), Wannigan, Rollway, American Harrow
My favorite trails: same, plus Covered bridge trail
Trail marking: Very good
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 4.5 stars
What I liked: Scenery is wonderful, sunny and wooded, hills and valleys. Trails are quiet, wide, with both skate and classic options - easy to negotiate. Wide range of difficulty levels.
What I disliked: Occassional holes in snow, where there had been some flooding (minor).
Comments: Sunday River Inn is right on the same property and is a wonderful family destination with a dining room, sauna, hot tub, games/puzzles, and a sledding hill.
Sunday River Downhill Ski area - 1/4 mile away.
Bethel (10 minute drive) has 70 buildings on the Registry of National Historic Buildings.

Name of XC Area: A Fierce Chase
Area number: ME6A

Trails that I skied: Everyone except Meandering Moose
My favorite trails: The fox
Trail marking: Very good
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 2.5 stars
What I liked: Definitely a place for a beginner (me). Really wide trails that were very well groomed and tracked.
What I disliked: The trails, in general, were pretty boring. The owner has a nice piece of land and he is a good guy, but driving out to Monson and paying $10 when the snowmobile trails around my house afford me better scenery is a bit disheartening.

Name of XC Area: Lost Valley
Area number: ME20
Times that I have skied there: A few times
I last skied there in: Mar, 2003
Trails that I skied: Brookside; Ridgeside
My favorite trails:
Trail marking: Very good
Trail grooming: Poor
Rating: 2 stars
What I liked: Varied terrain and pleasing scenery alongside a mountain stream, mostly wooded with some open areas; easily negotiated by a novice skier (as I am).
What I disliked: Trails begin and end on a downhill ski slope, which is OK except that downhillers sometimes cut onto the x-c trails, resulting in unexpectedly high-speed encounters.
Comments: Grooming is rudimentary at best: the snow is packed down to provide a skating surface. No help for classical novices here, nor is it worthwhile for skaters unless the snowfall is fresh. I made my last trip because I didn't have time to head northwest to one of our preferred x-c centers, and the local snow was too old and icy without some grooming, but the surface on these trails was no better than any snowmobile trail in the vicinity would have been - hard, icy, and in some spots rutted or grooved near the center line of the "groomed" part of the trail.
