Rating: 4.5 stars
What I liked: I agree with an earlier reviewer that there is a sufficient variety of terrain that any skier can find trails that will suit their ability and interest. From the owner Al Jenks, the new trail he has put in coming off Barrett Mtn is the steepest x-c trail in New England. Try it. It is a real challenge, especially near the bottom as it drops down to the Valley trail. A recent addition is an honor-system based Ski-Orienteering course that is set by Aims Coney and changed every week or so, usually on Tuesdays. One can access the map that list the current course at http://geocities.com/glidexc/ They are fun to do!
What I disliked: My x-c skiing ability is challenged by the several trails coming off Barrett Mtn!
Comments: Since I live but six miles from the area, I have skiied there many, many times and have an understandible bias. The trail ratings mean what they say.
Their soups and sandwiches are super as well.

Name of XC Area: Windblown Cross Country Ski Center
Area number: NH24
Times that I have skied there: Weekly
I last skied there in: Mar, 2000
Trails that I skied: all
My favorite trails: side hill slide and the old wild willy
Trail marking: Very good
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 5 stars
What I liked: The grooming and maintenance is always top notch. Whether you're in the mood for easy gliding or a more strenous workout or doing intervals or exploring or telemarking there are trails for all. Most trails offer variety of scenery and terrain without ever getting too far from the main lodge.
What I disliked:
Comments: Those who are used to skiing at golf courses or at the resorts whose trails are more like "highways" through the woods should be cautious. At least the first time on any of the trails. The terrain does not remain the same for long and some of the trails don't have long run-outs to coast to a stop.

Name of XC Area: Bear Notch Touring Center
Area number: NH8
Times that I have skied there: A few times
I last skied there in: Feb, 2004
Trails that I skied: trails in the back of property and the river trails
My favorite trails: trails on the hill side
Trail marking: Poor
Trail grooming: Poor
Rating: 0.5 star
What I liked: The trailing system was very nice especially the hillside.
What I disliked: Some of the trails were not tracked and dog feces was found on the trail.
Comments: I would not recommend this trailing system because they allow dogs to roam the trails. We encountered 5 dogs and dogs feces on the trails. One dog became over anxious and knock me over on my skis and I was injured. All other trailing systems do not allow dogs on them.

Name of XC Area: Woodbound Inn

Times that I have skied there: Once
I last skied there in: Jan, 2004
Trails that I skied:
My favorite trails:
Trail marking: Fair
Trail grooming: Poor
Rating: 1 star
What I liked: The scenery was nice
What I disliked: The trails were not well enough manitained. Also, I didn't think the layout was very well designed - there were times when a beginner's trail ended, and the only options were intermediate or expert. There was not enough snow on about 80% of the trails, but they did not close any of them or tell me about the lack of snow when I phoned them. Despite the fact that it was less than 15 degrees F out, there were small streams and large puddles that were not frozen over and impossible to go around. Everytime I went through and got my ski wet, I had to stop and try to scrape off the ice that formed.

What I liked: Forest trails are wide enough to get sun but protected enough to block the wind and make a cold day feel warm

Name of XC Area: Bretton Woods
Area number: NH4
Times that I have skied there: Several times
I last skied there in: Feb, 2002
Trails that I skied: Many, but not all
My favorite trails: Dark Forest, Sebosis, Coronary Hills
Trail marking: Very good
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 4.5 stars
What I liked: Some of the best groomed trails anywhere. Plenty of variety offered for all skill levels, much more than you can ski in one day (or even in two). Area is nicely wooded and not at all built up. On a clear day, the scenery is awesome.
What I disliked: Parking and buying passes can be somewhat irritating, since the touring center is never in the same place two years in a row. (BW is located at the Mount Washington Hotel, which has been in a constant state of renovation since they built the thing.) Also, in order to get to the main trail system, you have to ski about half a mile or so across a flat, windy golf course, which can become a pain on cold days.
Comments: I've never seen Bretton Woods badly overcrowded. If getting in and out is not a problem, this is a great take.

Name of area: Great Glen Trails
Area number: NH5
Times that I have skied there: Several times
I last skied there in: Feb, 2002
Trails that I skied: All except backcountry
My favorite trails: Whiplash, Dragon Corridor
Trail marking: Very good
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 5 stars
What I liked: If you like hills, Great Glen is the best area in the White Mountains. Trails are also kept in excellent condition. Scenery is unsurpassed, offering incredible views of the Presidents' Range. Warming huts along the trail provide a good place to stop for lunch. Some of the most challenging trails in New Hampshrie.
What I disliked: Not much here for beginers, although I'm told they do have a good ski school. Other than that, the only problem with the trails is volume. It is possible to do all the intermediate and some expert trails twice (and a little extra) in one day.
Comments: Trails are so good, you won't mind doing them twice. Base lodge is in a little disaray because of a fire, but as of last winter (02) the owners were planning on rebuilding near the Mount Washington Auto Road Building.

Name of area: Jackson Ski Touring Center
Area number: NH7
Times that I have skied there: Several times
I last skied there in: Feb, 2002
Trails that I skied: Impossible to ski them all, but quite a few
My favorite trails: Christmas Farm system
Trail marking: Very good
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 5 stars
What I liked: "World Class" is a very good description. Some of the best trails in the East, offering something for all skill levels. Not only are the trails numerous, but their sprawling, offering a variety of scenic options (with regard to the type of forest). Inns and eateries are numerous at different points along the trail. Also, JSTA is non-profit, so this is also the most inexpensive are in the White Mountains.
What I disliked: There are drawbacks to being the most popular area for twenty years. Jackson is too crowded to visit on the weekends (at least I think so), and the pubs that dot the trails are becoming a little too frequent as the area is being more and more built up around the tourist industry.
Comments: Still one of the best XC areas in New England.
