Name of XC Area: Methow Trail (Methow Valley Sports Trail)
Area number: WA4
Times that I have skied there: Several times
I last skied there in: Feb, 2005
Trails that I skied: All the areas
My favorite trails: Cub Creek in the Rendezvous Area
Trail marking: Fair
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 5 stars
What I liked: One of the largest trail systems, with impecable grooming. Last year even with minimal snow the skiing was superb.
What I disliked: It can be crowded on holiday weekends.
Comments: If conditions in the valley are not to your liking, try Loup Loup ski area. The XC passes are good for skiing the cross country trails at the Loup.

Name of XC Area: Mount Rainier National Park
Area number: WA25
Times that I have skied there: Several times
I last skied there in: Nov, 2005
Trails that I skied: Barn Flats area
My favorite trails: Reflection Lakes via Mazama or Paradise Loop
Trail marking: Fair
Rating: 4 stars
What I liked: For intermediate skiers, which I am, Paradise is an especially good place to start the season, because of elevation and early snow. Nov. 13, 05 we skied Barn Flats, our earliest start in years. Four feet of new snow- get going on a new season!
What I disliked: Nothing.
Comments: Always check with the rangers at the visitor's center for conditions.

Trails that I skied: Deer Creek loop; Dark Meadows and trails leading there

What I liked: In a record poor season, White Pass has got some snow and groomed the Nordic trails. About 4-5 inches of groomed base, with 3 inches of new snow last weekend. They hope to be open now thru April.
What I disliked: N/A
Comments: Glad to get some Spring skiing in what has been a disappointing snow year in the Cascades!

Name of XC Area: Cabin Creek Sno-Park

Times that I have skied there: Several times
I last skied there in: Jan, 2005
Trails that I skied: Viking Loop
My favorite trails: Viking
Trail marking: Very good
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 4 stars
What I liked: Cabin Creek is a great standby site in the Snoqualmie area. We skied last Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005. Considering the still light snow at the pass, the skiing was excellent, with plenty of snow, and good conditions at below freezing temps. How it's faring with the recent warming I'm unsure. But it was nice to get out in a slow starting season!

Name of XC Area: Mount Rainier National Park
Area number: WA25
Times that I have skied there: Weekly
I last skied there in: Dec, 2004
Trails that I skied: Barn Flats, Paradise Valley Road, Edith Creek Basin, Skyline Trail
My favorite trails: Mazama Ridge Loop, Tatoosh Range, Skyline Trail/Edith Creek Loop
Trail marking: Fair
Rating: 5 stars
What I liked: In the back country of Mt. Rainier is a National Park there is no logging, no grading, and no clearing. It is a pristine 100% natural environment that is exactly the same as it was 1000 years ago. After a heavy snow fall it is as if no one has ever been there before you.
What I disliked: I only dislike poor snow conditions, but with careful research and planning that can be avoided.
Comments: Mt. Rainier's Paradise area offers easy terrain at Barn Flats and the Paradise Valley Road. Moderate terrain in Edith Creek Basin and The Skyline Trail. Advanced terrain is found on the Mazama ridge loop and in the Tatoosh Range. Ski in a terrain that fits your skiing and route finding ability.

Name of XC Area: Mount Rainier National Park
Area number: WA25
Times that I have skied there: Several times
I last skied there in: Apr, 2004
Trails that I skied: Barn Flats
My favorite trails: n/a
Rating: 4 stars
What I liked: Finished the 2003-04 season at Paradise, and decided on Barn Flats, where I had not skiied for several years. Excellent extensive natural bowl, with intermediates/steep sides and much rolling terrain within the bowl. A lot of fun in Spring conditions; climb the sides and choose your runs!
What I disliked: Nothing, but in heavy new snow it's more slog than glide, but the sides of the bowl are still fun.
Comments: Any level can ski here, which is not true of all of Paradise by any means.

Name of XC Area: Iron Horse State Park
Area number: WA22
Times that I have skied there: Several times
I last skied there in: Feb, 2004
Trails that I skied: Iron Horse Trail
My favorite trails:
Trail marking: Very good
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 2.5 stars
What I liked: Nice scenery of the frozen lake. Easy access. Kid friendly (i.e. FLAT as a pancake). Good sledding hill in Parking lot.
What I disliked: FLAT as a pancake! Actually not a bad thing if you have a broken rib, though.
Comments: Avanalance hazard are is fairly small, but there was evidence of a recent avalance -- blocking one of the groomed tracks.

Name of XC Area: Cabin Creek Sno-Park
Area number: WA23
Times that I have skied there: Several times
I last skied there in: Jan, 2004
Trails that I skied: Viking loop and others
My favorite trails: same
Trail marking: Very good
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 4 stars
What I liked: Cabin Creek remains a favorite of mine. It's a very good example of well-groomed intermediate rolling terrain, with some black diamond for those who want them, and the wide flat roadway for any beginners in the party. It's my favorite of the snopark areas, and very accessible from Seattle/Tacoma
What I disliked: nothing
Comments: Nearby, of course, is Summit Nordic; my highest rated area. Cabin Creek is a very good alternate when those in the party don't want to ride the lifts at Summit Nordic and come down the runs off the mountain.

Name of XC Area: Mount Rainier National Park
Area number: WA25
Times that I have skied there: Several times
I last skied there in: Dec, 2003
Trails that I skied: Reflection lakes, plus a bit in the lodge area
My favorite trails: Reflection Lakes/Paradise Loop
Trail marking: Fair
Rating: 3.5 stars
What I liked: Paradise is a beautiful place to ski. I generally ski there as a season-opener, because it has earlier snow than most anywhere. Reflection Lakes/Paradise Loop and Barn Flats are for the beginning and intermediate skier; the rest of the area has great skiing for the expert.
What I disliked: Nothing, but this is ungroomed skiing.
Comments: Go to the info center for avalanche info; though this is generally not an issue on Reflection Lakes and the other trails mentioned by name.

Name of XC Area: White Pass Village Ski Trails
Area number: WA28
Times that I have skied there: Several times
I last skied there in: Dec, 2003
Trails that I skied: Deer Creek and others
My favorite trails: I don't really know the trails by name
Trail marking: Fair
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 4 stars
What I liked: One of the advantages of White Pass is the volume of snow, even in so-so years. This year, the snow is really tremendous.
What I disliked: Nothing
Comments: White Pass now has a Nordic center yurt adjacent to the trails, rather than the old set-up in the downhill lodge. This gives on-site rentals as well as a good warming hut for lunch.

My favorite trails: Rockdale Bowl; Silver Streak, Rockdale Canyon, Creek Run
Trail marking: Very good
Trail grooming: Very good
Rating: 4.5 stars
What I liked: With 52 kilometers of groomed trails and service by lifts, it's hard to beat Summit Nordic. Given the low temps and good snow so far, right now this is perhaps the best in the country. I was in Sun Valley last weekend (Jan 16-19) and missed lift-served xc, with all that net downhill!
What I disliked: nothing
Comments: Nearby Cabin Creek is one of the finer facilities as well.
